Having lived in both Los Angeles and New York, I've had plenty of days where making a pitstop at home wasn't an option. From work, to lunch meetings, to the gym, back to work, to hanging with friends, I needed a way to change on the go and sometimes that meant packing a closet worth of dresses and shoes into my car. Now, living in Brooklyn, I need to plan ahead every time I leave home, whether it's the changing elements (rain/snow/other things I didn't have to deal with in LA) or it just being a pain in the butt to trek all the way back from the city, for what should be a quick outfit change.
Pieces that I can transition from day time casual to night time fun have become clutch! Maybe switch my shoes, add a bit of jewelry and darker makeup. BAM! Whole new look!
Versatile outfits are also SUPER helpful when traveling. I always try and stuff all my clothes into carryon luggage because I'm paranoid about lost baggage. The less I need to pack, the better! A girl can only sit on her suitcase so many times to force-close it.
A key to outfits you can take from day to night are finding some good staple pieces for your wardrobe. Pieces that go with everything, and you never get sick of. One of mine, is this black faux leather skirt. The frequency at which I wear it, is borderline a problem, but I can't help it! The skirt goes with all kinds of tops, from casual band tees to bodysuits to formal silk blouses. It also doesn't wrinkle, which makes it ideal for a long day away from home and my steamer.
If you haven't noticed already, I'm a huge fan of pairing casual sneakers with leather or lace. I think it's fun along with being comfy. Why spend 12 hours running around in heels if ya don't have to, ya know? But when I'm ready to get a bit more formal, I switch out the comfy kicks for these ready-for-fall suede booties.
For the evening look, I've added a jacket. Since temps are starting to seriously drop at night, I can't leave home without one. And this blush-toned piece makes me less bummed about saying goodbye to warm weather.
More jewelry also helps rev up the evening look, as does a darker eye and lip shade!
